How to diagnose PCOS/PCOD:

        Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is easily diagnosed in some patients. In most of the cases they will have irregular periods or no periods. The periods will be very heavy with clots or very less bleeding than normal. In some cases, the patients will be given hormonal drugs like progesterone to induce periods for them who are missing the periods. Patients suffering from PCOD/PCOS are often obese and will suffer from excessive facial and body hair as a result of the high androgen levels. However, remember that not all patients with PCOD will have all or any of these symptoms.

        This diagnosis can be confirmed by vaginal ultrasound. In patients suffering with PCOD shows that both the ovaries are enlarged and there are multiple small cysts in the ovaries. These cysts are usually arranged in the form of a necklace along the periphery of the ovary. Blood tests are also very useful for making the diagnosis. Typically, blood levels of hormones reveal a high LH (luteinising hormone) level; and a normal FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) level this is called a reversal of the LH : FSH ratio, which is normally 1:1; and elevated levels of androgen ( a high dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate ( DHEA-S) level) ;

What is the cause for PCOS/PCOD:

        Many people really don’t understand what causes PCOD. In some cases PCOD is caused on the hereditary basis in which it is often transmitted from mother to child. Patients with PCOD have persistently elevated levels of androgen and estrogen, which leads to a irregular cycle. Patients with PCOD are mostly suffer from obesity because fatty tissues are hormonally active and they produce estrogen which disturbs the ovulation . Overactive adrenal glands can also produce excess androgen, and these may also contribute to PCOD. These women also have insulin resistance means high levels of insulin in their blood, because their cells do not respond normally to insulin. So, there is no correct reason to cause PCOD, it might effect any women around the particular age group.

Women suffering with PCOS will face this problem of conceiving due to the hormonal imbalance in there body. Even though in some cases if they conceive also, there will be frequent pregnancy loss. To overcome this problem we have to consult a doctor and take a proper medication. this medication will help us only to conceive as the problem cannot be cured permanently. In some cases, the women will have all the classic symptoms and signs, which means they will be thin with regular menstrual cycle and the normal ovaries size in the vaginal ultrasound. Even though they have all the normal situation, they will have PCOD. This problem is detected only when they are super-ovulated, which means they over respond and produce a large number of follicles. In such cases it is difficult for the doctors to diagnose it normally. Treatment should be given in correct time for such kind of patients.

       In some cases, the weight loss is a perfect treatment. It doesn’t work in all cases, and it is also very difficult to lose weight in the women with PCOS. They have to follow particular diet and schedule to overcome this problem. There are many ways to help to lose weight in such cases with healthy PCOS Diet. Along with the diet we have to follow some physical activities like walking, swimming, yoga and meditation e.t.c,. In some cases the situation is very typically to overcome with  medication and other methods. In such cases there is a surgery called laparoscopic ovarian cauterisation or ovarian drilling or LEOS ( laparoscopic electrocauterisation of ovarian stroma).
